Join us for a special “autism friendly” performance of Peter and the Starcatcher.

Working with the experts at Autism Friendly Spaces, this performance is designed for families and friends with children or adults who are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder or other sensitivity issues. Slight adjustments to the production are made, including reduction of any jarring sounds or strobe lights focused into the audience. Quiet and activity areas staffed with autism specialists are available in the lobby areas for those who need to leave their seats during the performance.

Funding support for this special performance is provided by The Bridges to Adelphi Program (Mitchell Nagler, Director); The Center for Health Innovation (Dr. Elizabeth Cohn, Executive Director) and the College of Arts and Sciences (Susan Briziarelli, Acting Dean).

Interdisciplinary partners for this special performance include Autism Friendly Spaces, Inc. (Dr. Jamie Bleiweiss and Dr. Donia Fahim, Co-Founders and Executive Directors); Professor Dale Flashner (Graphic Design Studio Director) and Professor Deborah Little (Sociology).

Tony-winning Peter and the Starcatcher upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan comes to be The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up (a.k.a. Peter Pan).  From marauding pirates and jungle tyrants to unwilling comrades and unlikely heroes, Peter and the Starcatcher playfully explores the depths of greed and despair…and the bonds of friendship, duty and love.

A young orphan and his mates are shipped off from Victorian England to a distant island ruled by the King Zarboff.  They know nothing of the mysterious trunk in the captain’s cabin, which contains a precious, otherworldly cargo.  At sea, the boys are discovered by a precocious young girl named Molly, a Starcatcher-in-training who realizes that the trunk’s precious cargo is starstuff, a celestial substance so powerful that it must never fall into the wrong hands.  When the hip is taken over by pirates – led by the fearsome Black Stache, a villain determined to claim the trunk and its treasures for his own – the journey quickly becomes a thrilling adventure.

Featuring a company of actors portraying more than 100 unforgettable characters, Peter and the Starcatcher uses ingenious stagecraft and the limitless possibilities of imagination to bring the story to life.
