The Importance of Being Earnest

Written by Oscar Wilde
Direction by Brian Rose

This classic farce by the brilliant Oscar Wilde, one critic wrote, “forms a class of British drama all by itself…it is, in its own province, a perfect work of art.”  When friendly rivals Algernon and Jack each discover that the other has a secret identity, the lies and confusion double when Jack uses his secret self to pursue Algernon’s cousin in the city, while Algernon uses his to woo Jack’s ward in the country.  But all bets are off when the women both announce that they could only fall in love with a man who is named…Earnest!  Barbs of pointed wit and sharp social satire combine in a comedy of confused identities, crisscrossing lovers, desperate christenings, lost babies in handbags and some of the British theatre’s most memorable language and characters. Join us to enjoy the play in which Wilde, another critic wrote, “came nearest to perfection.”  Performed by the students of the Department of Theatre.
